The construction of Tbilisi Metro began in 1952 and the first line section with six stations (four underground and two overground stations) was inaugurated on January 11, 1966.
The southern extension of the line with 3 stations opened on November 7, 1967. After that, the line was extended to the east featuring two new stations.
On September 14, 1979, a new line with five underground stations was inaugurated. It was later named Saburtalo Line.
The northern extension of the first line (two stations) came into passenger service on November 7, 1985. Another underground station opened on December 9, 1985 in the eastern part of the line and finally, two more stations came into service in the northern part of the line on January 15, 1989.
Akhmeteli–Varketili Line is 20,4 km long and it features 14 underground and 2 overground stations.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union Georgia gained independence and a new era began.
It was only on April 3, 2000 that one new station came into service at Saburtalo Line.
The line currently features 6 underground stations on 6,7 km of tracks.
Thus, Tbilisi Metro consists of two lines and 22 stations (of them 20 stations are underground) and 27,1 km of track. There is one interchange station which brings together two stations.
