Tbilisi Metro

Gen. Director Levani Koplatadze   The construction of Tbilisi Metro began in 1952 and the first line section with six stations (four underground and two overground stations) was inaugurated on January 11, 1966.

The southern extension of the line with 3 stations opened on November 7, 1967. After that, the line was extended to the east featuring two new stations.

On September 14, 1979, a new line with five underground stations was inaugurated. It was later named Saburtalo Line.

The northern extension of the first line (two stations) came into passenger service on November 7, 1985. Another underground station opened on December 9, 1985 in the eastern part of the line and finally, two more stations came into service in the northern part of the line on January 15, 1989.

Akhmeteli–Varketili Line is 20,4 km long and it features 14 underground and 2 overground stations.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union Georgia gained independence and a new era began.

It was only on April 3, 2000 that one new station came into service at Saburtalo Line.

The line currently features 6 underground stations on 6,7 km of tracks.

Thus, Tbilisi Metro consists of two lines and 22 stations (of them 20 stations are underground) and 27,1 km of track. There is one interchange station which brings together two stations.

Modernisation activities of Tbilisi Metro in 2010:

Signaling Department

  1. Modernisation of signaling system generator components (150 items),
  2. Modernisation of station clocks (5 sets).

Power Supply Department

  1. Modernisation of emergency lighting (step-down substations and traction step-down substations were fitted out with voltage inverters with charging units. This helps to convert DC into AC voltage of 200 V and 50 Hz which is used for emergency lighting where modern energy consuming bulbs of 220 V and 50 Hz are used).
  2. Modernisation of supply mains in case of a blackout. To improve the use of diesel electric-power generators a new substation control system has been developed and introduced. The high voltage goes from diesel power substations to other metro substations to feed metro facilities.

Track and Tunneling Department

  1. Replacement of 3,7 km. of rails,
  2. Replacement of 860 railway sleepers,
  3. Replacement of one set of switches,
  4. Replacement of 470 rail pads,
  5. Replacement of 5,15 t. of screws,
  6. Reinforcing the prefabricated tunnel lining between Guramishvili and Sarajishvili stations,
  7. Replacement and renovation of 247 reference marks,
  8. Reinforcing the pedestrian passageway to Guramishvili station,
  9. Reinforcing 10 metres of passenger platform at Guramishvili station,
  10. Didube station reconstruction.

Electrical Mecanical Department

Installation of Altivar-61 frequency converters. They enable a smooth start and a partial load mode of asynchronous motors.

Nadzaladevi Depot

Modernisation of train washing facilities (replacement of electric brushes, special washing liquid is used).

Gldani Depot

Modernisation of 11 cars.

Modernisation activities in Tbilisi Metro in 2011:

Signaling Department

  1. Modernisation of the main and linear stations of the centralised traffic control system,
  2. Modernisation of fire alarm systems at 3 stations, introduction of digital systems,
  3. Modernisation of 200 signaling system generators.

Power Supply Department

  1. Modernisation of the substations recovery scheme and emergency power supply,
  2. Reinstating cable entries at substations,
  3. Introduction of substations control system.

Track and Tunneling Department

  1. Replacement of P-50 rails,
  2. Replacement of railway sleepers,
  3. Replacement of one set of switches,
  4. Replacement of rail pads,
  5. Replacement of screws.
  6. Reinforcing passenger platform at Guramishvili station,
  7. Reinforcing escalator balusters at Vokzalnaya-2 station,
  8. Development of vault reconstruction plans at Guramishvili station,
  9. Modernisation of Electrodepo station,
  10. Compressor maintenance,
  11. Overhaul of service trains (including wheelsets),
  12. Replacement and renovation of reference marks.

Electrical Mecanical Department

Installation of Altivar-61 frequency converters. They enable a smooth start and a partial load mode of asynchronous motors. Renovation of escalator control panels.

Gldani Depot

Rolling stock modernisation.
